Bishop Williams Institutes Holy Cross Rector

Bishop Williams with the extended Sanchez family

On August 2, 2009, using a lovely liturgy the Rt. Rev. Daren Williams instituted the Rev. Juan S. Sanchez as Rector of Holy Cross Anglican Church, Tucson. The church was beautifully appointed with flowers, and it was the first use of the new Bishop's Throne. Speaking to a full house, Bishop Williams reminded the church of its duties to the rector, and the rector's duties to the church.

The service was followed by a luncheon provided by the congregation. Thanks to much forethought, tables and chairs were arranged so that most could sit together in the main room. Everyone did a wonderful job in their appointed tasks.

Room for the Children

Recently a room that had been used for storage was repurposed for the use of the children. Now it is an inviting space for retreat during the service, use as a Sunday School room or a place the children can play while adults visit after the service. Already the little ones are enjoying the change.

Clericus
&
Mission
Retreat

The Clericus & Mission Retreat, held again at Malibu, was a great success, both in participation and in content. Well planned workshops offered a number of opportunities for all of us to grow in our ministries in the Diocese.

The Rev. Canon Davis gave us a thoughtful look at the Sacrament of Penance. Canon Bower presented a helpful view in the work of Evangelism & Outreach. Our own Fr. Juan presented an overview and the importance of Home Visitation. Canon Rivers shared his experience in Hospital Visitation and Father Chris Kelley offered to us a wonderful workshop on Sermon Preparation, and School programs (Vacation Bible School, Sunday School) was presented from St. Columba's Parish (materials, concepts and organization).

The DOW homepage has further information and links to pictures of the event.

Clay Play Days

In April, the crafting group met to make porcelain clay ornaments guided by Maryella Fetzer. Using cookie cutters they had fun forming the various shapes. In May they prepared the ornaments for finishing and painted them with the glaze. They will meet at least one more time to work with the glaze and then the items will be fired to finish these charming ornaments.

Holy week

including Palm Sunday worship and the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, culminated in the great celebration of Easter Sunday. After all the preparations of Lent, the parish gathered to rejoice in Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Potluck was enjoyed by all

Annual Meeting

Holy Cross Church held its Annual Meeting following the service on March 1. A Potluck lunch preceeded the meeting. Fr. Sanchez as the Priest-in-charge called to order his first annual meeting. A new Vestry was elected. Delegates to the Diocese of the West Synod to be held in Phoenix in October were also elected. When the Vestry reorganized, Maryella Fetzer was appointed Sr. Warden.

GOD SOURCE OF LIFE:
The Old Testament depicts God as the Father of Israel and personifies God with terms such as WORD (Heb,dabar), SPIRIT (ruah), WISDOM (hokmah), and PRESENCE (shekinah). In antiquity, God the Father were synonyms; God the Father is source of all of creation (Gk.,Pantokrator) (Gen 1:26; 3:22; 11:7; Isa 6:2-3). Early liturgical and creedal fragments refer to God as the “Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” and St. Paul instructs his readers to offer all praise to God through Jesus Christ and indeed to do all things in the name of Jesus Christ. Some texts mention the name of both Father and Son, or God and Christ (Rom 4:21; 8:11; 2Cor 4:14; Col 2:12; 1Tim 2:5-6; 6:13; 2 Tim 4:1) and a few link the names of Father, Son, and Spirit (Mt 28:19; Mt 3:16-17; Gal 4:6; Rom 8:15). The text from Eph 1:3-14 deserves special mention, it summarizes the basic providential plan of salvation initiated by God, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, and consummated in the Holy Spirit. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ guide us always.

Join in the Arts & Crafts

A group has formed to learn new crafts, share craft ideas, and make items suitable for gifts or bazaars. This an opportunity for interested folks to try something without all the initial expense of buying materials or tools that might never be used again. Currently they are learning about working with clay to make procelain ornaments. They are meeting as announced on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. here at the church. Call the office for further information.

Food bank

We have made a delivery of food to the Community food bank.  However, people going without food is a on-going problem and not just on holidays.  If you decide to help with this project, please bring a contribution of non-perishable food, or money.

Collecting Aluminum and Pop Tabs

We continue to gather aluminum in order to help grow our building fund. We are also separating and collecting the pop tabs which then go to help at the Ronald McDonald House.
